Workshops: Traditional Beadwork, Storytelling, Spoken Work, Wampum Teachings, Music, Dance, Tree Planting CovenantThis event will celebrate and recognize Indigenous People’s Day and Connect the American Indian Community House with North Brooklyn. We will explore the application of Indigenous Values, Culture, and Ethics through environmental teachings and knowledge of how to coexist with nature through dialogue, storytelling, art, dance, and song. This will be a day to deepen our connections with one another, and discuss our relations to the land we occupy.

There are plenty of wearable pieces such as purses, moccasins, pottery and cradleboards from the past. Dating all the way back to the 1700's, the spirit and stories these pieces carry will whisk you away into a vision of life during its era. To hold them pulls you into either the making of it or the originals owners daily life.

"Oakes is 38-year-old designer, activist, and high school volleyball and swim coach who wears her hair down to her waist as a means of connecting with the Mohawk tribe in which she was raised. Oakes grew up on the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory on the border of New York State and Canada and now lives in New York City.

My hair is a way for me to identify myself. People say, “Oh, what are you, Indian?” It’s a cliché. “Oh, you have long hair?” It’s like, yeah! I’m Mohawk....
